Packed with 90’s gaming nostalgia, Jamie Quantrill’s F37 Panda Pop is an 8-bit love song to the games of his childhood.

To emulate the style of typography, F37 Panda Pop was limited to a restrictive square grid. Similar to the programmers of the time, this constricted the type and lead to innovative solutions. The stepped diagonals, lack of optical corrections and rigid letter forms are typographic oddities now, but are what place F37 Panda Pop in the crude polygon era. F37 Panda Pop may be an artefact of a time, but as the wheel of fashion brings Capri pants and bucket hats back into trend, so to will the nostalgia for video game type.

Interview

Tell us about the inspiration behind your collaboration with F37®×. If it was an unused concept, what was the potential use case for it.

A modular typeface inspired by the 8-bit typography used in the video games of my childhood, such as Pokémon and Super Mario.

When starting the process of creating your font, what typographic conventions did you look to break or experiment with? Or were there conventions of functionality you championed?

I wanted to create a typeface that was visually engaging whilst being built on a restrictive square grid. Inspired by the Wim Crouwel 'gridnik' fonts of the past.

Now that your typeface has launched, what would be your dream project to use your F37® typeface on?

Something space/game/sci-fi or tech related. I would leave to see it absolutely massive on the side of something.

What have you learnt through developing and creating your own typeface(s) with our F37® type designers?

The craft and rigour that goes into creating a typeface, also that it requires scrutinous attention to detail before final signoff

How would you describe your typeface in three words?

Formulaic, Goofy, Fun.
