Legibility studies began as early as 1825.
Opinions concerning the best type of serifs to use, the effects of ascenders and descenders, brightness contrast between paper and ink, and various other factors in legibility of letters were freely expressed throughout the nineteenth century and even up to the present. In 1949, a publication on typography emphasised legibility of the specific letters in defining legibility of print.
