F37 Saint is a compellingly unusual graphic font, set apart by its whimsical flicking terminals and spiky attitude.
Some typefaces are exercises in how far you can push a stylistic quirk. F37 Saint falls firmly into this camp. It all started out with an uppercase S, whose flicking tail bore little relation to its upper portions. Taking a calligraphic approach to the design, this gem of an idea was flushed through as many letters as possible to explore what worked and what didn’t.
As the font developed, rules and rhythm were set down and applied to bring coherence and consistency to the letter set. Some flicks were exaggerated, others pulled back, to make sure there was a balance and the font was kept on the usable side of experimental.
And in case you’re wondering, the name Saint is slightly tongue in cheek. Because it’s not a saintly, goody two shoes font at all, more of a feisty outsider.
