We created two athletic-modified fonts for TNT Sports, based on F37 Judge and F37 Wicklow, to tee up the launch of the new brand.
TNT Sports will present a host of premium live rights including the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC, Boxing and WWE. Phew!
BT Sport has become TNT Sports as part of the joint venture between Warner Bros. Discovery and BT Group. A brand with a strong heritage in North America and Latin America, the channel launched in the UK & Ireland ahead of the start of the 2023/24 football season.
F37 Foundry was briefed by branding studio DixonBaxi to design a pair of modified fonts that symbolised TNT Sport’s extensive offering.
TNT Sports Sans is directly modified from our popular F37 Judge font, an impactful geometric sans-serif with a tall x-height. It’s slightly chunkier than its predecessor, with subtle changes to some of the detailing to make it more suitable for on-screen use.
TNT Sports Serif is more loosely based on Wicklow, which has its roots in stonecarved lettering. To give it some points of difference and character, we’ve incorporated some precise features such as serif-less diagonals, smooth serifs, sharp spurs and round dots. We have also eased off the stroke contrast so that the letterforms hold up better for on-screen TV graphics.
Other typographic detailing to look out for includes default mono spacing for TNT Sports Sans for setting tables and TNT Sports Serif Italic, a true italic with 10° slant, sharp outstrokes and various serifless stems.
And finally, the TNT Sports ‘viewfinder’, a key asset of the rebrand, peppered throughout the character set. This is a simple, flexible graphic device made up of two (or sometimes one) parallel dashes with a short spur to suggest the reticule of a camera viewfinder.
